Colorado Fundraisers a Success
Category: Raising Funds to End Charcoal | Date: Mar 10 2008 | By: admin
Dearest Coloradans,
Thank you for showing up for the mountain gorillas! It is very heartening to know how much you care and are willing to sacrifice to help these Great Apes.
Donations
A special “THANK YOU!!” goes out to Joan H. and John N. who each donated $5000.00 as well as to Linda N. who donated $1000.00, Summer K.
and Laura and Jerry G. who donated $500, my wife Michelle who donated $300, Boulder artist Mike Brouse who donated a beautiful painting for auction, Siva S. who donated $150, Nick and Sara R., Alison K. and Jenny K. who donated $100 and Helen R. who donated $75. Thanks also go out to the many people that donated lesser amounts. You all are a part of the solution to this terrible problem.
I have yet to get a report on the web donations, so stay tuned…

If you are interested on holding your own fundraiser, this poster art is available to you!
Local Press and Radio Coverage
We managed to get some nice press for these events, thanks the old 6 degrees of separation truism — and often with only one or two degrees. On March 2nd we landed on the front page of the Boulder Daily Camera and on March 4th, made it into the Denver Post. Emmanuel and I also managed to get a quick interview in at Boulder’s public radio station, KGNU. Poor Emmanuel hadn’t even been off the plane for an hour before he was wisked into the KGNU studios. I’ll be posting that interview later.
As all good efforts go, it “took a village”. If it weren’t for the efforts of our volunteers, we never would have been as successful. In the fall, Emmanuel and I will be going back on the road to do two weeks of back-to-back fundraisers in cities across the United States. If you would like to be involved, please let us know. We would love to have you on our team!

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated, and gave so generously of their time, talents, etc. There are several of us who might be interested with helping out with future events. Perhaps you could post a rough schedule of dates in each city you two will be visiting.

If you’re planning events in the District then I’m definitely willing to lend a hand.

I am very interested in obtaining this poster/image for a fund-raising event I want to have in Tucson. I’m currently working on a series of encaustic paintings of/about the mountain gorillas, and I want to donate the money raised to the ICCN/Wildlife Direct. Would you be interested in coming to Tucson to speak? I read the article about you in the Boulder paper and identified quite deeply with your emotional reaction to the gorillas’ plight. Bravo to you for wonderful work and congratulations on a successful fundraiser!

Hi Nancy,
I’m not art-savvy, so what are encaustic paintings? Will there be an opportunity to bid on them online? I hope you’re Tucson fundraiser does well. I lived in Tempe for about 12 years …

Hello Sheryl, Theresa, Nancy. Thanks so much for the offer, which I’ll definitely take you up on! We are looking into possibly having several events across the US in the second half of September… What do you think?

Love the poster, love the idea of having a fundraiser here in the LA area. I’ve got my feelers out there. Emmanuel I sent you an email yesterday. I’ve sent my sister in law in Santa Barbara the link to the poster, it’s a small world, her daughter graduated from Boulder a couple of years ago. Also, trying to make other connections. Keeping my fingers crossed. Sheryl, if you guys get something going in DC, I’ll try to come. Lisa

Congrats Robbie and thanks to all that donated - this is such a special and unique approach to wildlife protection and it is fantastic to know so many out there support it!

Thank you all for your encouragement and offers of help. The Denver and Boulder events raised close to $15,000. This will get us going on the community cooker, but we still need to raise funds for the other alternative fuel projects, such as the plant-oil stoves. How does the saying go? No rest for the weary. Realistically, we are going to have to put several viable, sustainable, and well-supported alternatives on the ground in Congo.
Yes Nancy, I would be willing to come to Tuscon to speak. We might even be able to time it with one of Emmanuel’s trips. Please feel free to email me: robert@wildlifedirect.org

It’s so fantastic that a person like you have taken on the cause of protecting the mountain gorillas.
Thank you so much!

Hi Robert and followers of this great blog. This article is about the community cooker - its’ more impressive than I’d imagined! http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/31/2020317.htm

Robert — I am also interested in helping out with a fundraiser in DC if you are planning one. Congratulations on the success of the Colorado event!

Emmanuel, I think the National Zoo would be a good place for a presentation or lecture. I’m going to find out who to contact so you or Robert can find out how to get on their calendar. There were quite a lot of people at the recent Wildlife Alliance presentation, and these events are well publicized among the zoo’s members and volunteers.

Hi Sheryl! Wow…talk about putting your intention out there and getting immediate feedback. Yes, I will look into online bidding. Encaustic is a painting medium in which pigment is suspended in hot beeswax. I love it because, like gorillas, it is natural, beautiful and mysterious, it can potentially last “forever”, but very fragile if environmental conditions are not ideal (in the case of encaustics, you don’t want to leave them on a hot dashboard, for instance). Thanks for your interest! I’ll keep y’all posted. I grew up in DC (Alexandria, actually)!

Robert, I’m really pleased about your interest in coming to Tucson, and the possibility too of coordinating that with Emmanuel’s visit. I will be in touch! Thanks so much!

I’m so proud of everyone’s response, we seem to have it covered coast to coast. Emmanuel, I will put in a request at work to take 2 weeks off, starting mid September so I can be available to help any way I can with anyone who could use some help. If nothing else, I could help with someone’s airfare if that would enable them to participate in an event planned on either coast. Many of us are also terribly concerned with the grave situation in the Mara. Perhaps we could incorporate this vital cause into our fundraisers as well. I’m sure our gorillas won’t mind sharing the spotlight with the lions.

Fundraise Ideas, on 02 Apr 2008
The most important rule in school fundraising is to gather a good and enthusiastic team together. Once you’ve got the support of a team, you can share ideas, and work together to raise funds for your school. so its better to have a candy bar shop because childrens like chocolates a lot.
